We possibly have all been at one or the other end of a broken promise. Either we have made a promise that we did not keep or someone promised us something that they failed to fulfill. Sometimes people make promises truly intending to fulfill them but then fail due to unforeseen circumstances; and on the other hand others promise fully knowing, as the word leaves their mouth, that it’s a lie. God’s promises, however, are of a different kind. He says “Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.” Isaiah 46:11

Just before He returned to Heaven, Jesus gave a special promise, one so important to all His followers and the entire world. “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:2, 3. Jesus  promised that  He will come back to this earth for the second time, and just like He fulfilled the ancient promises made about His coming into the world for the first time, He will also fulfill the promise of His second coming. And to make sure that we do not mistake this event, the Word of God has given us abundant evidence about the way in which He will come.

“See, I have told you beforehand. Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it.  For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” Matthew 24:25, 26. Just like lightning can be seen for great distances, so Jesus’ coming will be a visible and open event. The coming of Jesus will not be some secret or hidden event. “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24:30. When Jesus comes every living person on earth will see Him and Scripture tells us that He will come with all the angels of Heaven.  It will be a glorious and magnificent event, one we cannot fully capture with our imagination.

The coming of Jesus will bring to an end the pain, suffering and evil in this sinful world and by giving our hearts to Him we can prepare to meet Him in joy when He comes.

Key Texts:   “And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Acts 1:10, 11
